Will VCU’s Art Center Boost the Arts District?

While not a very accurate portrayal of the City’s support of First Friday,  this is how much of Richmond gets its news.

Local general contractor and developer City & Guilds filed a special use permit for 1322 W. Broad St., near the intersection of Broad and Bowe, for a four-story apartment building with retail space [...]

Common Groundz Bites the Dust

The VCU foundation turned Common Groundz into this some time last week in order to provide 27 more beds for VCU students.  The 120 year old building had stood on Broad for parts of 3 centuries. I wonder how much time it is going to take to turn this, into this. Note the ironic text on [...]

Good News for Common Groundz? Not!

Scaffolding, fencing and a dumpster went up around the old Common Groundz Coffeehouse building this past weekend.  I don’t have any word on what might be happening, but this doesn’t jibe with the demolition plans of the VCU foundation.  I’m hoping to hear more from the Historic Richmond Foundation soon. **************Update******************** See comment below.  More [...]

Common Ground

So Much Pain – So Little Gain

Today’s RTD Business section reveals what looks to be the final chapter for a century old building on Broad Street.  Most recently the home of Common Groundz Coffeehouse and a collection of 2nd floor apartments, VCU is using the privately held VCU Real Estate Foundation to bypass review by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Is Carver Coming Back?

In a recent article, Style Weekly asks, “Can a working class neighborhood live with and even benefit from a major university as a neighbor?“.  The answer is complicated and neighborhood opinion is divided.  The question has gotten new life thanks to a major residential/retail proposal on West Marshall Street.  It’s easy to say Carver is [...]
