Will VCU’s Art Center Boost the Arts District?

While not a very accurate portrayal of the City’s support of First Friday,  this is how much of Richmond gets its news.

West Broad

And the Culture War Continues

The unity of purpose that once marked the downtown arts community has largely fractured. Fault lines run between Curated Culture and the Downtown Neighborhood Association, Christina Newton and Katie Ukrop, Charles Samuels and Dwight Jones, those pushing a small tightly focused arts district and a broader one covering most of downtown.

First Friday the Way It Was Meant to Be

RVA on Ice may be gone, but First Friday marches on.  While the Arts District is in flux, the artists, galleries and businesses of Greater Jackson Ward need your support, especially now during the slower winter months.  The good news is that the art “tourists” are mostly staying home, so you can enjoy the galleries [...]

Trouble Brewing Between DNA and Curated Culture

via Richmond Magazine: As the on-again-off-again debate over the fate and direction of a proposed downtown arts district again warms up ahead of a meeting later today, a fierce behind-the-scenes struggle is also brewing between Curated Culture director Christina Newton, who organizes the First Fridays Art Walk, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association, the civic group [...]

Is the spell of summer broken?

From my brief observation after the fact and a few words with the valet captain at Tarrants, it looks like the unruly crowds of this past summer have found something else to do on First Friday. The sidewalks were quiet when I walked down Broad around 9:30. Last month it was crowded with underage kids, [...]

Another First Friday Assault?

I tried to indicate I didn’t feel as safe as some others seemed to be last Friday. This report lends some creedance to that. Pretending a problem doesn’t exist doesn’t make it go away. Also, we are not the only part of town experiencing this type of behavior. Not dealing with it is not a [...]

First Friday @ First Light

Two snapshots in time of last night's art walk.

First from the Times Dispatch

During the Art Walk.

The First Fridays Art Walk was back in business, and the mood was mellow. About halfway through (7:00 pm), pedestrians comfortably filled the sidewalks along Broad Street in downtown Richmond's cultural district.
... galleries had a steady stream of visitors through their open doors on the mild October night. Restaurants did brisk business. Police officers patrolled on foot with little to do other than direct traffic so that pedestrians could cross more easily at intersections with no traffic lights.

The second from myself.

After the Art Walk.

Things didn't seem quite so mellow later on. I took a stroll down Broad after 9:00 pm.  Here's what I saw.
  • Lot's of teenagers, not mobs, but groups of 3 to 10.
  • One large group of preteens, 25 to 30, with no adult in site.

Michael Paul Williams and the Future of First Friday

"I was standing outside the Rite Aid," he recalled during an interview in his family's home near The Diamond. "Ten seconds later, someone walks behind me and hits me in the face." He was punched and kicked numerous times as he lay curled on the ground. Eventually, his attackers ran off. No one attempted to help him, he said.
