Fan District Association to Sponsor City Council and School Board Debates

The Fan District, Richmond, Virginia – September 10, 2012 – The Fan District Association announced today their sponsorship of two separate debates for candidates vying for election to the 2nd and 5th district seats of the Richmond City Council and the Richmond School Board.

The School Board Debate is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9 and the City Council debate is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10. Both events will commence at 7:00 p.m. at the William F. Fox Elementary School Auditorium, 2300 Hanover Avenue, in the heart of Richmond’s Fan District.

Dr. William “Bill” Bosher, Jr., former Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Commonwealth of Virginia and Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Education at Virginia Commonwealth University will moderate the School Board candidate debate. Ryan Nobles, anchor of NBC12 News First at 4, NBC12 News at 5:30 and Fox Richmond’s News at 10 will moderate the City Council candidate debate.

Roger Whitfield, President of the Fan District Association remarked, “Although the FDA does not endorse any candidates, the FDA is hosting the debates on October 9 and 10 because it fits right in with our mission to encourage, facilitate and inform a healthy exchange of ideas among our residents. Our organization is civically engaged and we want to provide the opportunity for residents to be engaged and informed as they make their important voting decisions at the polls on November 6th.”

Bill Montgomery, FDA Program Chair and coordinator for the debates, has confirmed that all candidates in the 2nd and 5th City Council and School Board races have agreed to attend and participate.

The debates are open to the public at-large, but residents of the Fan and other neighborhoods in the 2nd and 5th City Council and School Board districts are especially encouraged to attend.

The Fan District Association is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and betterment of our urban community by promoting the welfare of the Fan District and the City of Richmond by representing the interests of the community at the local and state level.
