Moreira, Please! Centenary Classics Tonight

Centenary Classics, our annual summer concert series, will celebrate 2011 with the music of Antonio Leal Moreira (1758-1823), one of the most productive and talented Portuguese composers of the second half of the 18th century. From court serenades and church music, to masses and operas, Moreira was a prolific composer and had his work spread in all of Portugal and Brazil. This concert will feature an orchestra of period instruments and a 30-voice choir and is directed by Stanley M. Baker.

The concert will feature music that, to the best of our knowledge, has not been heard in over100 years. Antonio Leal Moreira lived and worked in Lisbon but his works were also well known in Brazil.

There will be two modern premieres: a brief and very lively Sinfonia to a Serenata written in 1793 for the birthday of Princess Maria Teresa and his most popular and widely performed Mass in C major, a half-hour work for choir and chamber orchestra. Rounding out the program is Moreira’s Te Deum, a compact setting of this ancient hymn of praise.
