As part of the River City Saunter, we were treated to tours of several historic rehab projects, one of which was an apartment project on 3rd Street that I noticed after the Tea Party convention. This building is lot more interesting than the industrial brick exterior would indicate.
There are 15 apartments being carved out of the interior this building which includes secured, indoor parking.
The two units I saw were both two room studio style apartments with a very modern kitchen with appliances I would kill for. The kitchen opens into a combined living and dining area that looks out over a “cool” roof covered with photovoltaic and solar thermal panels.
The green energy component is what makes this development unique. The solar thermal units will provide all the hot water and voltaic cells will provide 1/3 the electricity. I haven’t heard what the rent will be, but considering the neighborhood and the market I’m guessing in the $800 – $1,000 range. The overall project looks like it’s 3 to 6 months from completion.
There were several other interesting stops on this tour, including the old Nash dealership next to Sauers and the long empty CNB tower. More on those later.
